Serious side effects have been linked to the use of Remicade.
Respiratory
tract infections, headaches, nausea, coughing, and diarrhea are just a
few. There are also serious infections associated to Remicade, including
tuberculosis and sepsis, which have been reported to be fatal. Recent or
past exposure to people with tuberculosis should be discussed with your
doctor. Activating latent tuberculosis in patients on Remicade is a risk
that must be taken very seriously. Past history of infections, including
a current infection should also be discussed with your doctor if you are
planning on taking Remicade or are already on it. Serious infusion reactions
with hives, difficulty breathing, and low blood pressure have been reported
due to use of Remicade. Since patients often are on other immunosuppressive
therapies, such as steroids, methotrexate, 6 mercaptopurine, or azathioprine,
the increased possibility of developing an opportunistic infection becomes
much greater.
More than 2 million Americans suffer from the disease (rheumatoid
arthritis)--and about 25 percent of them may even become disabled because
of it. But Remicade is now one of the first drugs on market that's not only
used to treat symptoms but in some cases is able to stop the progression of
the disease.
